Latin American identity can be understood in many ways: from its diverse pre-Hispanic past to its role as a set of colonies that belonged to the Spanish Empire, and then moving on to its independentist efforts and modernization through the crystalization in nation-states. What products defined the experience of Latin Americans in each moment? How did those products reflect the way in which Latin Americans saw the world? What were the practices that living conditions in the different Latin American regions demanded of their inhabitants? What meanings were atributed to those products and practices? How has identity been articulated through those products, practices, and perspectives? These are some of the questions that we study in this course.
