Cien años de soledad by Gabriel García Márquez is usually recognized as one of the great literary works of the Latin American canon; and as one of the works that propelled the recognition of Latin American culture world-wide. In this class we read the novel in its entirety, we use it to reflect about different moments of Latin American literature, and to study different literary strategies utilized by the author. In this class we also emphasize the connections between the novel and its historical context. Some secondary readings include: fragments from García Márquez's autobiography, Gerald Martin's and Dasso Salvídar's biographies of the author, poetry by Nezahualcóyotl, excerpts from Hernán Cortés's letters, short stories by Soledad Acosta de Samper, Silvina Ocampo, Jorge Luis Borges, and Rosario Ferré as well as some scholarly articles about the novel.
